Hotels in Salisbury and Wiltshire with special
offers and weekend breaks
Salisbury's medieval heritage and Gothic cathedral combine
easily with the vibrancy of modern life. It is an ideal destination for a weekend
break with great shops to lose your heart over, traditional pubs and restaurants,
relaxing walks across the watermeadows and a charm of its very own, this city
will fast become one of your favourites, and it is no wonder that Observer readers
voted it in the top ten of the best British tourist destinations. Salisbury
is most famous for its magnificent
Cathedral,
built in 1220 in the Early English style. The spire, 404 feet high, is the most
lofty in England. The Cathedral stands in a most beautiful Close, amid many
ancient and historic houses, notably the "
The
King's House ", the North Canonry and
Mompesson
House. The walls and gateways of the Close date from the 14th Century and
lend an added charm to the streets leading to the Cathedral. The city itself
clustering round the Cathedral preserves much of its mediaeval appearance, with
its Poultry Cross and old inns, notably the " Old George " which dates
from the 14th Century, and has sheltered many historic characters, such as Samuel
Pepys, who mentions it. ( Regretably the Old George has closed its doors to
the public and is now only viewable on special Heritage Open Days). Old Sarum,
the site of the former city, lies about two miles to the north. It is a magnificent
specimen of an ancient earthwork adapted by the Normans to a castle and city
site. The ruins of both Castle and the two previous Cathedrals may be seen here.
Salisbury Plain in the north of the county, rich in remains of prehistoric days,
barrows and camps, has also the finest example of megalithic architecture in
the country, the magnificent prehistoric stone structure of
Stonehenge,
a World Heritage site . Amesbury, which lies within a mile of Stonehenge,
has also many historic associations. Many objects of interest from Stonehenge,
Old Sarum and the burial mounds on the Plain may be seen in the Salisbury Museum.
