Downton Moot, a scheduled Ancient Monument, was a Norman motte and bailey castle covering nearly 10 acres and built by Henri de Blois, Bishop of Winchester, and grandson of William the Conqueror. Early in 18thC, the remaining 7.5 acres of earthworks were planted with trees and landscaped as a garden for Moot House, creating amongst other features, a terraced amphitheatre leading down to a pond, a sunken lawn, a lime walk and a temple of Mercury on top of Temple Mount. Many of these features and original ditches are still in place.
